Million, Billion, Trillion

Monday, April 12th, 2010

In the midst of some forgotten political conversation, I realized that million and billion weren’t registering appropriately. Because of the almost inconceivable numbers involved, I heard them as a lot and a whole lot, respectively. I opened PhotoShop to make a comparison, but quickly realized that a third number wasn’t going to show.

Later, as I was making pixel cubes for a different, but also forgotten purpose, I realized that the million-billion-trillion relationship could be implied. The idea is that we quickly gather that the third cube is shaped like the first two.

A pixel-art 3d chart, similar to a bar chart, but able to express a higher ratio difference because of implied size.

The First 1,000 Prime Numbers

Monday, December 14th, 2009

This page of the First 1,000 prime numbers has html and css for one to 7,919 – enough for one thousand prime numbers to be shaded gray. The fun though, is that if you re-size the browser (or use firebug to change the css), the primes align themselves in visually interesting patterns.
Resizing to line returns on multiples of 30 (or just 6) will illuminate much of what people seem to note about the “Sieve of Eratosthenes”, namely that multiples of 2,3, and 5 dice the primes into columns.
